Voyage Souterrain

Director: Jonas van der Molen
A sensory journey through a landscape formed by human exploitation. From dark coal mines to abandoned quarries. What do these places reveal about the relationship between humans and nature?
The sporadic presence of humans feels threatening in this graduation film by Jonas van der Molen. For his visually rich nature essay, the filmmaker travelled to Saint Petersburg and Maastricht, capturing landscapes shaped by past human exploitation, such as coal mines, forests and quarries. From the depths of the earth, an impression of the natural world emerges, guiding our senses through the movements and textures of a landscape once shaped by destructive force.
