Tussen wal en schip

Director: Sven Peetoom, Juliette Dominicus
Three grandchildren take their Indonesian grandparents to the place where they first set foot on Dutch soil. Can they unravel their grandparents’ history that they suppressed for so many years?
Three Indonesian youngsters from the third generation take their grandparents back to the Lloyd Pier, where they arrived some 75 years ago during their repatriation from the former Netherlands East Indies. While the last witnesses relate about the crossing, their story is conveyed, via reconstructions, shadow play and projections on the quay walls, to the new generation. What does it mean to feel neither Indonesian nor Dutch? What was the integration like, but also the discrimination they faced in the Netherlands? And what does the grandparent want to pass on to the grandchild, now the silence has finally been broken?
