A personal quest by writer Sana Valiulina for the past of her reticent, unfathomable father, who spent a decade in a Stalinist penal colony. Poignant and moving.
Previously, Aliona van der Horst portrayed the Russian past on the basis of her personal family history, in the Golden Calf-winning film Love Is Potatoes (2017). In a similar way, in Turn Your Body to the Sun, she uses the personal quest of the Dutch-Russian writer Sana Valiulina and her sister Dinar as the starting point of a poignant and touching historical exploration. After her father’s death, Sana looks for the black holes in his life and the ten years of hardship in a Gulag penal colony. Incorporating intimate letters, diaries and unique historical colour images, the film tells both a personal and a universal story that still leaves deep scars.
