How long can three minutes last? Amateur images from 1938 – the only footage of Jewish inhabitants of a Polish town – are artistically edited, granting postponement to the inevitable end.
In 1938, David Kurtz captured the Jewish inhabitants of the Polish town of Nasielsk. They go about their daily lives or curiously swarm around the camera, looking at us. We look back. We know how it ended, but as long as we keep looking, they are still here. Three minutes of footage, largely in colour, the only moving images we know of this Jewish community. What does this say about them? This remarkablefound footagewas imaginatively edited into an impressive film essay of over an hour. We hear writer Glenn Kurtz (David Kurtz' grandson), as well as Maurice Chandler, who appears in the original footage as a boy. Helena Bonham Carter performs as the narrator.
