How do you present a global phenomenon such as the climate crisis in an intimate and personal way? Like this! Rory Pilgrim, along with ten young climate activists, made a visually and aurally delightful work about it, which won the prestigious 2019 Prix de Rome for Visual Art.
At first sight, the climate crisis seems to be the main subject, but gradually it turns out the youngsters in The Undercurrent - ten young climate activists from Boise, Idaho – have more than one issue. One is contending with gender inequality, the other is at loggerheads with his parents, or is homeless. The essence is that we all need a home or place of refuge. Visual artist Rory Pilgrim, winner of the 2019 Prix de Rome for Visual Art, employs a variety of cinematographic means and techniques, not to capture the climate crisis and its personal consequences, but as a means to turn the tide. Thus, the film is not 'finished', but a work in progress.
