The leading role in this documentary is played by the gifted and ever-energetic writer Cynthia McLeod (1936). She has given herself one last mission: Calling permanent attention to the history of slavery and of the legendary first freeborn woman and first black female millionaire in Suriname, Elisabeth Samson (1715-1771).
Filmmaker Mildred Roethof follows icon Cynthia McLeod (1936), writer and historian, on a breath-taking journey through our colonial past. McLeod is on a quest: Calling attention to Elisabeth Samson, the first freeborn woman and first black, female millionaire in Suriname at a time when trans-Atlantic slavery was at its peak. Women rarely featured in historical works, let alone a black woman. McLeod debunks the created untruths, myths and stereotypes through in-depth factual research. We get to know her as a strong and candid character with a great sense of humour, who still lives life to the fullest. The President’s Daughter & the Richest Freeborn Lady is a film about two razor-sharp women, providing insights that cast a surprising light on the Dutch 'sorry'.
