The Birds Shall Return

Director: Nour Alkheder
Three generations of Palestinians resist the occupation of their homeland by passing their stories on to the next generation. A short documentary filled with intimate testimonies of paradise lost.

Intimate testimonies from grandmothers and third-generation Palestinians in Jordan and the Netherlands show how the passing down of stories from generation to generation is an act of resistance. From memories of a paradise, now out of reach, to the harsh reality of the struggle against the occupation of their homeland. This black-and-white graduation documentary doesn’t just tell these stories – it becomes a form of protest itself. A dream and a promise of return, for themselves or for future generations.

This film is part of the NFF Studentencompetitie and nominated for the EY Talent Award 2025. The winner will be announced on Monday, September 29th, during the Talent Awards Ceremony at the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.
