For Jaklien and Jeroen, their arduous hand-bike trip through the Austrian mountains is not only a physical marathon session, but also a mental journey that focusses on the elusive character of convalescence and the body-mind relationship.
Every Wednesday evening, Jaklien zooms just above the asphalt of a Rotterdam velodrome on her hand bike, while for the Utrecht-based paraplegic Jeroen the final phase of his convalescence has begun. For both, the HandbikeBattle is drawing near: a gruelling cycling trip through the Austrian mountains. Physical exertion and quiet recovery periods alternate with memories, perceptions and dreams. In the process, the mountain scenery reflects their inner journey. As they carve their way upward, a story unfolds in this debut documentary about the special relationship between body and mind.
