In early 1998 the dance project Grip was premièred, the result of co-operation between the dancer Anne Affourtit and the singer Mathilde Santing. These two friends from childhood involve two choreographers, three composers and several lyricists and designers. Erwin Olaf, himself one of the designers of the show, decided to follow its development from the start. A camera crew regularly attends rehearsals, but Olaf also films with a Hi8 camera: he is a participatory voyeur. The collection of talent and egos ensure that rehearsals go far from smoothly. Erwin Olaf's report provides a unique glimpse of the development process of a show and the choice between personal ambition and subservience to art that each participant has to make.
