Thriller in which a man looks for his vanished girlfriend. The film is based on Tim Krabbé’s novel Het gouden ei.

A young couple is on their way to their holiday destination in France. At a petrol station, the woman wants to buy a few things and disappears. For years, her desperate boyfriend keeps looking for her. This attracts the attention of the murderer of his vanished girlfriend. What follows is an unalloyed power game. This psycho-thriller is based on Tim Krabbé’s short novel Het gouden ei. In 1988, the film was awarded the Golden Calf for Best Feature Film and the Film Critics’ Award. In 1992, Sluizer directed an American remake: The Vanishing.
