Spinoza

Director: Rudolf van den Berg
In 1656 Amsterdam, independent thought is seen as dangerous. Though his neighbour Rembrandt warns him of the wrath of church and state, young Spinoza calls for reason to be chosen over fear. Starring Pierre Bokma and Bart Bijnens.
The young 17th-century philosopher Spinoza (Bart Bijnens) sees injustice all around him in Amsterdam. Defiantly, he provokes those in power, drawing fierce reactions from both church and state. Still, he persists in his pursuit of freedom, grounding it in a philosophy of reason, one with no place for God. Spinoza's neighbour, Rembrandt van Rijn (Pierre Bokma), is rather more devoted to God, and warns him of the perilous consequences of his defiance. But Spinoza refuses to let fear rule him. The final film by director Rudolf van den Berg, who passed away shortly after filming wrapped.
