Spijtmoeders

Director: Milou Gevers
What if you love your child, but feel utterly miserable about your role as a mother? A hybrid documentary about three women stifled by the way our society defines motherhood.

To remain incognito, the three mothers in this film appear as puppet animations. In voice-over, they talk about their painful struggles with motherhood, with regretting their choice and the feelings of guilt and shame this gives them. What if other people think they are not suitable mothers? Or do not love their child? Interviews are interlaced with archive footage, showing which role society plays in the construction of gender norms and expectations that girls and women have to deal with. This documentary raises challenging questions concerning free will, gender roles and individual convictions.
