In memory of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands East Indies, Jan Blokker wrote a play about the leader of this country's nationalist movement and its first president, Soekarno (1901-1970) for the Nationaal Toneel. Director Schenkkan was interested in Blokker's sources and motives. Archive footage and excerpts from the play are alternated with interviews with the actors, the director and the author about their struggle with a dramatic text that had never before been performed.
