In this erotic drama by Basic Instinct scriptwriter Joe Eszterhas, Las Vegas is the backdrop against which leading character Nomi Malone works her way up from being a lap dancer in a shady nightclub to one of the leading acts in a topless show in the renowned Stardust Club. Along her way to the top, the bisexual and drugs snorting star of the show crosses her time and again, but Nomi finds out that sex and jealousy make powerful weapons.
Showgirls won the American Raspberry Award for Worst Director. Verhoeven is the only person that so far has come to receive the prize in person.
