This ink-black comedy is vintage Van Warmerdam, with its wry dialogue, absurd plot and meticulous design. But at times the polder western is also nerve-rackingly suspenseful, when hitman Schneider and the gruff recluse Bax wait patiently for the other to betray his position in a lethal cat-and-mouse. The killer hidden among the reeds; the writer entrenched in his holiday home by the waterside, where, to add insult to injury, he is saddled with more unwelcome visitors: a cross ex-lover and a depressed daughter.
