In the divided Hungarian town of Békéscsaba, an escaped rooster takes up residence in a city square, where the inhabitants treat him like a king. Its death sparks conspiracy theories, dealing a fatal blow to the fragile harmony.
In south-eastern Hungary lies the town of Békéscsaba, where poverty, loneliness and political division shape daily life, according to the people in this graduation documentary. On a cold Saturday in December 2020, a rooster escapes from the market. It settles on a square in the town centre and grows into a national hero. Moved by its stubborn desire for freedom, the residents take it under their wing. But when the rooster – now a symbol of solidarity and hope – dies, various wild theories about its death circulate, and the newly formed community crumbles in mistrust and accusations.
