A railway documentary about doctors traveling by train for eight months non-stop through Kazakhstan’s interior, offering care to people with limited access to medical services.
Every year, a train carrying doctors and medical equipment travels some 18,000 kilometres through the remote, sparsely populated regions of Kazakhstan. As part of the social project Salamatty Kazakhstan (Healthy Kazakhstan), local residents can consult doctors for examinations and diagnoses. Ben van Lieshout followed life on board – doctors and train staff working and living together during the long journey, far from home and hearth. At the heart of the film are the meaningful encounters with the people who come for consultations, sharing their ailments and everyday concerns.
