Perfect Day

Director: Neeltje ten Westenend
In neighbourhoods dominated by high-rise flats, every occupant has a personal story about the view. During a stay in an apartment there, designer Neeltje ten Westenend, in cooperation with her colleague Henriette Waal, examined how tenants of the Overvecht quarter in Utrecht perceive and use their environment. Like many other suburbs constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, the plan of Overvecht was based on modernist ideals about collective behaviour, ideals that are now considered outmoded. The expressive documentary Perfect Day, a side project of the examination, can be watched as a period document of a quarter that will change drastically in the next years. Incorporating images of everyday activities and festive moments that combine different views, the film offers a series of short stories about the shared outside space.
