When Axelle Nurhaliza Maillet, the director of this cinematic poem, was still a child, Atun was her nanny. Now, Maillet takes the still hard-working Atun to the beach, where this rare day off grows into a tribute to a life of sacrifice and devotion.
Paper Boat is a cinematic poem about Atun, the woman who cared for the filmmaker from birth and became her chosen mother. Atun now runs a roadside warung in Bali with her family. To keep the business running and care for their loved ones, they work tirelessly, allowing themselves just one day off every two weeks. This graduation film is that day off. In Atun's brief respite from the demands of everyday life, space opens up for poetic reflections on care, labour, sacrifice, and a bond forged beyond blood ties.
