Paikar

Director: Dawood Hilmandi
Years after running away from home as a boy to seek his freedom in the 'West', Dutch-Afghan filmmaker Dawood Hilmandi returns. There, he confronts both his authoritarian father and himself.
Dutch-Afghan filmmaker Dawood Hilmandi returns to his home country to confront his estranged father, a former mujahideen fighter with a violent past. What does freedom really mean to him? Paikar moves between Afghanistan, Iran and the Netherlands, exploring the invisible legacy of war and silence passed down through generations. Already screened at numerous international festivals and awarded three prizes at IDFA, this documentary is both a personal quest for liberation and a universal story about overcoming alienation. About how, even amid adversity, space can open up for freedom, creativity and new connection.
