Feature-film version of the three-part TV series Oude Tongen inspired by the notorious child-pornography scare in the village of Oude Pekela. The story is situated in the fictional village of Oude Tongen. Two doctors, married to each other, are shown a pornographic video and think they recognise a child from the village. The rumours that ensue adopt increasingly grotesque forms. The village is inundated by journalists, psychiatrists, psychics and politicians. Oude Tongen hits the roof. Fear turns to paranoia; prejudice becomes a smear campaign. The lack of actual proof for sexual abuse of innocent children does nothing to change that. Reijnders was inspired by the American soap series Twin Peaks in which reality is approached through delusions and fantasies.
