Beneath the Asphalt illustrates the poem by the same name written by Menno Wigman, who reads it in the voice-over. In the black-and-white animation, flat drawn objects (tree, gate, house) fill the world like in a rare show. The camera glides into a school, where a boy is engrossed in an atlas. Outside, a grown-up man recognises figures and events in the `cracks in the asphalt'.
