Whether it is an earthquake, nuclear disaster or war: time and again, human resilience turns out to be phenomenal. How are the inhabitants faring when the dust has settled and the camera crews and disaster tourists have left?
Amatrice, Chernobyl, Aleppo: three iconic disaster areas in modern history. Amatrice was destroyed in 2016 by an earthquake, in 1986 Chernobyl went through one of the biggest nuclear disasters in human history and the people of Aleppo are now carefully rebuilding their city, after the war reduced the historical centre to ruins. This triptych about post-catastrophe life and reconstruction focuses on the survivors’ poignant questions. The backdrop is the growing disaster tourism on visually stunning locations.
