Just as there are genes that autoreplicate, there could also be mental constructions that replicate themselves. The evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins calls them 'memes'. Examples of memes that reproduce themselves and jump from brain to brain are melodies you can't stop humming, fashion trends and ideologies. According to the psychologist Susan Blackmore, the mania around Princess Diana is completely logical from the concept of memes.
