Documentary about the versatile singer Cathy Berberian (1925-1983). Berberian 'the Callas of the avant-garde', played an important role in the development of vocal music in the fifties and sixties. She broke vocal taboos, developed new voice techniques, renewed the traditional recital with her sense of theatre and humour and provoked much controversy with her performances. In the documentary The Air I Breathe, archive footage of several shows, stories by colleagues, reminiscences by her daughter and home movies made by her father from the thirties onwards provide a sensitive portrait of the life and work of the singer.
