To gain clarity in his relationship with his mother, with whom he had no contact for several years, director Paul Hylkema seeks out other relatives. But taciturnity turns out to be a family tradition.

‘I think I actually want to make a film about us’, Paul Hylkema tells his mother on the phone. Initially, the idea makes her apprehensive. In his intimate graduation film, Hylkema searches for the reason why he and his mother fail to discuss their problems. He reaches out to family members he and his mother haven’t been in contact with for years – her mother, brother and two sisters – and uncovers a family history of avoidance and denial.
