The music videos Emmanuel Adjei made for artists like Sevdaliza were evidently noticed by Madonna. The megastar commissioned him to make a video that gives Joan of Arc’s conviction a topical angle.
Lead actor Mykki Blanco is a transgender rapper. For her lyrics, Madonna was obviously inspired by the trial of Joan of Arc, condemned for wearing men’s clothing. Teaming up with regular cameraman Paul Özgür and co-screenwriter Marleen Özgür, the director uses sharp contrasts to capture the connection between the condemnatory society of six centuries years ago and that of today.
