In the performance Optical Machines, Rikkert Brok (projections) and Maarten Halmans (sound) work with self-designed projectors, made to make continuous loops. The different reels are combined, while the footage and light sources are controlled live. The projected image consists of fading patterns and animated effects, which develop through overlapping and quick rotations. The image reels or plateaus consist of 3D objects that are projected. The built-in sensors control various analogue synthesizers to manipulate the sound in real time. Optical Machines is an examination of the possibilities of translating abstract images to sound, where the installation that generates the image provides a series of parameters with which the sound is manipulated.
