Emigrating hurts. One of filmmaker Hans Heijnen’s uncles left for the United States in the 1950s, but his mind and heart remained in his native Limburg. Can homesickness ever subside?
In the 1950s, one of filmmaker Hans Heijnen’s uncles emigrated to the United States to try his luck. Heijnen’s earlier documentary Uncle Frank (1996) showed how down in California his uncle and other people from Limburg kept cherishing the habits of their native region, even if they are long outdated there. Twenty years later, Heijnen renews his visit to his uncle. How happy is he now over there? Does he still agree with the choice he made at the time? Can homesickness ever subside?
