Melvin of twelve sees his second father Hans as his real father, although they hardly ever do anything nice together. Hans, who suffers from a personality disorder, usually feels too 'shitty' or 'indisposed' for that. To such an extent that he already feels annoyed when his own stepson is in a fine temper. According to his wife, Melvin's mother, the cause of this paralysing dejection lies in a poor sense of perspective. Before the registering camera eye, it is hard to budge Hans, except for a beer or cigarette, a weary sigh or protracted groan.
This documentary follows the small family for a year and a half, particularly analysing the father-son relationship. It is harrowing to see how the father monopolises the attention, while the son hides his true feelings behind a cheerful mask. The question is to what extent this will have repercussions on the adolescent Melvin.
