An interactive virtual reality experience exploring the fateful events and emotional aftermath of the flight MH17 disaster.

A sunny summer’s day turned pitch black on 17 July 2014 when a passenger plane that had taken off in Amsterdam was shot down over Ukraine. All 298 people on board were killed. This interactive virtual reality experience is a poetic visualisation of elements and emotions surrounding this tragic event, including the grief and loss felt by the bereaved families, and also the ultimate acceptance. Due to the non-linear narrative structure, viewers are free to experience the story at their own pace. Iris van der Meule uses virtual reality as a medium to express her fascination for themes relevant to society. The result is a remarkable digital monument that keeps the memory of the disaster alive.
