Like a white box of bricks, the building stands in the open landscape. The hospital in Daugavpils, Latvia is a small self-contained world where all facets of life come together. In this purely observing documentary, serious, moving and light-hearted moments blend with the colours and sounds of this special place. We see the exertion and joy involved in childbirth, and read the concern on the faces of the doctors gathering around an old man in a coma. Woman around a bed break into a passionate song. A group of men philosophise about being alone, the mystery of the universe and the quality of honey. Hands tenderly fold together. Two boys, both in a cast, strike up a friendship, but have to part again. Outside, a helicopter lands. On the other side of the window, seagulls fly past. Sparse music emphasises the intimate, yet sober character of this portrait of a community united in rain or shine.
