Imprimatura

Director: Semâ Bekirović
In her studio, Semâ Bekirović attempts to paint a nude portrait of her mother. In doing so, she explores whether anyone can ever truly be captured in a portrait.
Can painting be a cinematic method? Certainly, according to this candid documentary, in which artist and director Semâ Bekirović talks with her 78-year-old mother while painting her nude portrait. During the sessions, the two discuss their family history and the role of women in art, among other things — but above all, a life-changing experience the mother had, after which she felt truly free for the first time. Through painting, the daughter tries to understand that experience, exploring whether anyone can ever truly be captured in a portrait.
