How To Dance

Director: Aileen Ye
A challenging short dance film, accompanied by the words of hip-hop artist KRS-One. As the body learns to communicate in new ways, doesn't freedom become less an idea, and more a vibration?
If a body cannot speak freely, what can it say? This question lies at the heart of the work of Ireland-born, Netherlands-based filmmaker Aileen Ye. In How to Dance, shot on 16mm, she explores this through a short choreography: a man dances exuberantly to club music, accompanied by shouts, words and strobe-lit imagery. In the voiceover, hip-hop artist KRS-One explains how today's resistance no longer takes place on the barricades, but instead requires a form of self-control.
