Impression of a Rotterdam shopping street in 1930. In this 'absolute film', cameraman Andor von Barsy shows the Hoogstraat within the framework of a puppet theatre show, with curtains that open at the beginning of the film and shut at the end. Featuring unusual compositions and attention for shadow play and reflections, the film shows the lively atmosphere in the shopping street, until the lights in the display windows and bars go on at night. Ten years after these shootings, the street was destroyed in the bombing of Rotterdam.
