Why are we afraid of nothingness? In an attempt to fathom his deceased father’s extravagances, filmmaker Marc Schmidt embarks on a personal quest for the emptiness inside himself and others.
What does 'emptiness' mean and why is it so unbearable? Along with four partners in misfortune, filmmaker Marc Schmidt (De regels van Matthijs) explores the feeling of emptiness and how we try to escape it. For example, a young mother subdues it with daily binge eating and a sex addict pursues her ‘shot’ searching for the man who can heal her. The ultimate confrontation with nothingness is taken on by a sailor crossing the Atlantic Ocean all by herself. In between the portraits, it gradually becomes clear that Marc, too, is familiar with the emptiness underlying these excesses.
