Three-part TV series based on the novel by Hugo Claus. The series sketches the development of a Flemish youth who grew up during World War Two in a hypocritical and opportunistic family and at a strict Catholic boarding school. When Nazi-Germany invades Belgium, the boy has to leave his boarding school and return to his native village. There he grows up among relatives and neighbours, a community filled with confusion, betrayal and desire. Slowly but surely, the horrors of war get through to him and he becomes aware of its consequences for his surroundings. Seen through the boy's eyes, the harsh, grotesque reality melts into a miraculous world of fantasy.
