A young painter copes with his sweetheart's death by painting her. When she was still alive, he had proposed that she would sit for him. But before she could, she passed away. With an ingenious rhythm, the film alternates past and present, life and death, colour and bluish light, lull and storm up to the apotheosis and the striking clou in the final shot.
