Het land van mijn ouders

Director: Marion Bloem
Personal documentary in which writer Marion Bloem examines her Indonesian family’s past. What about the integration of Indonesian Dutchmen? Which place do they feel connected to?

In 1950, Marion Bloem’s parents came from Indonesia to the Netherlands. The writer and artist, who was born in Holland, feels the strong urge to understand her family’s past. For the first time, she travels with her own family to the ‘homeland’. She also interviews her parents and attends reunions of Indonesian Dutchmen to examine which place they feel more connected to. In 1983, Bloem’s personal quest resulted not only in this documentary, but also in her well-known novel Geen gewoon Indisch meisje.
