At the Netherlands Film Festival's request, various students from the Utrecht Academy of Arts made a documentary, inspired by Bert Haanstra's work, as part of the retrospective dedicated to his oeuvre in 2007. In Hekwerk, they display the Dutch people's tendency to demarcate their habitat by means of gates, fences and walls. Allotment gardens, back gardens, wooded plots, even entire urban districts are fenced off and guarded against the outside world. Man and fence seem inseparable.
