Giovanni / Carmen

Director: Laura Stek
Can you break the stereotypical image of the Roma and Sinti with a radical retelling of the opera Carmen? A theatre-maker attempts to do just that, but his own heritage brings complications of its own.
Theatre-maker Giovanni Brand wants to reinvent the world-famous opera Carmen. Brand feels drawn to the iconic role of Carmen, while at the same time battling the archetypal image of the Roma woman portrayed in the opera. To break through that stereotype, Brand, who comes from a Roma family, decides to play Carmen himself. With his flamboyant queer interpretation, he searches for new ways of storytelling, but is the Roma community actually waiting for Brand's representation?
