The discovery of natural gas in the Groningen soil brought us riches, but the consequences for the population are literally earth-shattering. How should we cope with this?
Once upon a time, the distant ancestors of the people of Groningen refused to be subjected to the Romans. Many centuries later, these people were conquered after all, and the discovery of natural gas heralded sweeping changes. One or two eccentrics raised objections, but the Netherlands advanced dynamically with the layout of the gas network. By now, our country ranges among the richest in Europe, and construction workers renovating or demolishing houses in Groningen get a course in dealing with emotions. How do we cope with the consequences of gas extraction that hardly anyone could predict?
