Has the black girl Ella ever been abducted by aliens? Grappling with her place within a white society, she grows convinced she, as the extra-terrestrial Xoxo, lived in other women for three centuries.
This Afro-futuristic fantasy uses science-fiction elements to say something about our society. After a possible encounter with aliens, Ella (12) grows convinced she led previous lives, as four other women: the Ghanaian Ama, the Surinamese Peetje, the biracial Victoria and the Curaçaoan Juliana. What do all these experiences – or are they observations by an extra-terrestrial explorer? – say about the female ‘black experience’ in the past and in today’s Netherlands? A magical-realist story in which Ella’s chances seem to be determined by the history preceding her.
