Hauer as medieval mercenary at the head of a plundering gang.
When Paul Verhoeven and scriptwriter Gerard Soeteman were working on the chivalric series Floris in 1969, the idea arose to make a feature film about a medieval mercenary. Sixteen years later, the plan was brought to fruition in this American-Dutch-Spanish co-production, Verhoeven' s first English spoken film.
Shot in Spain, the pageant film introduces Rutger Hauer as a medieval mercenary leading a gang of riffraff that takes revenge on a nobleman and his son, murdering, raping and pillaging to their hearts' content along the way. A raw depiction of the Middle Ages, with lots of violent and sexually explicit scenes.
Flesh + Blood was awarded a Golden Calf in 1985 for Best Feature Film and Best Director.
