Filmprogramma 1 - Black Cube

What does 'black cube' mean? 'White cube' represents the empty, white gallery in the museum. 'Black cube' is the name of the empty black box, referring to the cinema/theatre and to the 'black box'; that which is not yet determined, the unspecified. Sabine Mooibroek and Quirijn Kuchlein, who compiled this programme for De Filmbank, started out with the notion 'black cube' to see if films and videos could be presented in a better way. We know the museum presentation, where visitors often come in in the middle of a screening, and the cinema screening, with its fixed spatial lay-out. Both have their advantages: the shared experience of a linear screening in a cinema and the possibility of spatially intervening that a gallery offers. Mooibroek and Kuchlein tried to combine these advantages. For the film and video presentation, they selected 'miraculous' films, films that set up their own system and dictate their own rules, but also question them. The spectator does not have all tools to understand everything he sees, but he can gain new insights and rearrange experiences and memories. It is an encouragement to reconsideration. De Filmbank presents Black Cube 8 consisting of: Roos (Eric Steensma, 2000, loop), Frictional Mall (Jetske de Boer & Dirk van Lieshout, 2003, loop), Aragats (Nora Martirosyan, 2003), Dokumentation Die Tauben(Helmut Dick, 2002) Dokumentation Das Salatfeld (Helmut Dick, 2001), Fuguettes (Sander Haccou, 2004), Panzano (Rosa Barba, 2000).
