Enigma is about the thought patterns of the draughts player and thought in general. Draughts is pretty boring to watch, so the makers formulated two presuppositions: 'You can get to know a people by analysing their traditional sport' and `draughts is a projection of the working of the brain'. The film focuses on legendary draughts players such as the Russian Anatoli Gantwarg and the Senegalese Baba Sy, their strategies and tactics, characters and emotions. The film also looks at rituals in the African desert and talks about the similarities between draughts, soccer and life, intuition and the need to transcend logic.
