Virtual reality transports you to the bar of an Amsterdam cafe in the 17th century, where four young women will tell you their story if you catch their eye. Historic and timeless, theatrical and truthful.
In the volumetric VR experience Angels of Amsterdam you become part of an important chapter in the lives of four young women. At the bar of a cafe, you meet Maritgen Jans, Juliana, Elsje Christiaens and Soete Cut. The gold of the Dutch Golden Age is beyond the reach of these combative angels, but each in their own way have taken fate into their own hands. Make eye contact and they will share their stories in the form of song, dance or musical performance. The installation explores the dark sides of the wealth and freedom which have been associated with the port and trading city of Amsterdam since the 17th century. The history of the power relations between rich and poor and women and men in this early capitalist society is of course also about today’s world. The details of the women’s stories may seem strange to us now, but their essence is timeless.
