Stelling's second historical feature film is based on an anonymous medieval morality play, in which the travelling protagonist Elckerlyc - i.e. Everyman - cheats, steals and murders. Then, he falls in love with a sweet girl, but their liaison is short-lived, as the village idiot strangles her. Driven to insanity, Elckerlyc takes revenge on his fellow men. Just as in Stelling's debut Mariken van Nieumeghen, most roles in Elckerlyc were played by amateurs.
