Debut film by Rademakers, who had his roots in the dramatic arts, about a historical figure: the eccentric village-doctor Van Taeke (played by Max Croiset). The singular Friesian doctor is obviously the odd man out in the God-fearing Brabant village he is working in and is not accepted by the local people. The film is based on a novel by Anton Coolen and was the first Dutch film to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film.
