Feature inspired by the ancient saga about an ill-fated seaman who is doomed to sail the world's seas for ever. Against the background of the 80 Years War to gain Dutch independance from the Spanish, the film tells the story of a serf who sets out to search his alleged father, The Flying Dutchman, and in the end finds himself. His adventure ends in an Amsterdam madhouse where he can take over his father's mythical nickname. The Flying Dutchman is an allegoricalfairy-tale about the advent of individualism, the importance of imagination, death and the longing to fly.
